Jan 31 Over and out

Tuesday 31st Jan

THANK YOU!

Tuesday 31st Jan
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me through my Red January challenge. I cannot believe how brilliant people have been. I am so grateful for every single person who has made a donation, or wished me well or asked how it was going. You’re all fabulous. Thank you xxxx

Jan 31 I finished!!

Tuesday 31st Jan
Thrilled to bits at completing my Red January challenge. It has been amazing in so many ways 💕

Jan 31 All done!!

Tuesday 31st Jan
All steps completed by end of today’s working day. Had to rush about in between online parents evening appointments but I got there! 🤩

Jan 30 Evening walk

Monday 30th Jan
Am shattered now. And it’s (supposedly) my day off!!

Jan 30 Another photo of me in a red hat

Monday 30th Jan
I shall miss my red hat. Last day of Red January tomorrow! I shall miss that too.

Jan 30 Beautiful day

Monday 30th Jan
Sun is out, sky is blue. Fantastic morning for a tramp round the woods. Lots of birds singing too - I even heard a skylark. Spring is most definitely on the way! 👍🏻

Jan 30 Spring is coming!

Monday 30th Jan
Bluebells coming up in the woods. Lovely!

Doris Duck

Sunday 29th Jan
My swimming buddy. She stays nearby but doesn’t talk much 👍🏻

Jan 29 Swim spot

Sunday 29th Jan
Thanks to Ilkley Mental Health Swims for organising this swim. Nice to go with others for my first proper river swim 👍🏻

Jan 29 River swim

Sunday 29th Jan
Have been putting this off as swimming in a river freaks me out a bit. Really pleased I did it as it was (eventually) lovely! It felt REALLY cold getting in though - though at 6.5 degrees it was considerably warmer than last weekend. I’d do it again for sure. But not on my own.

Jan 28 Early pre-swim walk

Sunday 29th Jan
I’m not usually up this early on a Sunday but needed to walk Murphy before going for my swim.

Jan 28

Saturday 28th Jan
Went into work for a couple of hours this afternoon - had a break halfway through and banged out some steps. I think I’m wearing a path into the carpet now! It actually did ‘revive’ me and improve my concentration afterwards. No photo from tonight’s walk as I forgot to take my phone with me. River swim tomorrow- 😱🥶

Jan 28 Spring-like Saturday

Saturday 28th Jan
It’s feeling more like Spring every day!

Gatekeeper

Friday 27th Jan
My furry bestie Murphy - she has to wait at the gates now as her elderly hips generally prevent her from wriggling underneath.

Happy Friday everyone!

Friday 27th Jan
And…. Relax 😊 17195 steps completed before tea time. Result!

Jan 26 Barn owl

Thursday 26th Jan
(Not my photo) Just for interest 🤩

Jan 26 Barn owls!

Thursday 26th Jan
Most exciting walk tonight - I heard a pair of barn owls discussing nuptials. I’ve seen one flying along my usual route just a couple of times over the last few months. And now there’s a pair. We’ve got plenty of breeding tawny owls but the barn owl is a bit special. Fingers crossed for a successful pairing. And I happen to know where there’s an owl box hidden nearby! 😀🤞

Jan 25 Steps

Wednesday 25th Jan
Still did all my steps plus a few extra 😀👍🏻

Jan 25 Up Days and Down Days

Wednesday 25th Jan
There is no photo tonight because I didn’t feel like taking one tonight. I still did my walk and feel a bit better, but sometimes just a walk isn’t quite enough. I know some of my pupils are now reading these updates so my message for you is this: some days you are going to feel down, or dark, or angry or all 3 or something else. And that’s ok! We all have good days and bad days. The important thing is that you find out what things you can do that will help - and then do more of those things until you feel better. Talking to someone is great, especially if you feel like you need some help. Getting some exercise is also a really good thing to do (Red January!) but you might need to keep doing it. Be resilient. Keep going, keep trying. Some days you have to work on your mental fitness just like you do with your physical fitness. 👍🏻

Jan 24 Feeling happy 😊

Tuesday 24th Jan
Evening walk was lovely. Decided not to treat it as a chore but to listen to some nice music and just enjoy some peace and solitude. Saw the clouds clear, the crescent moon was uncovered, then all the stars. Came back so much more relaxed than when I set off, feeling a bit harassed. This is why getting some exercise is so good for our mental health. It doesn’t have to be a slog in the gym or a power walk, it can just be getting outside for a gentle stroll. It’s what you make of it.

Jan 24 Stepping out at work

Tuesday 24th Jan
Knew I was tired today and wouldn’t want to have to do too many steps when I got home. So got lots in over lunchtime and in my free lesson 👍🏻

Blue hat day

Monday 23rd Jan
Left my Red hat (for Red January) in my swimming bag from yesterday so today is a blue hat day. But with a red sky 👍🏻

Jan 22 Red Sky at Night

Monday 23rd Jan
Spectacular sunset on tonight’s walk.

Jan 23 Feels like Spring

Monday 23rd Jan
Lots of birds out being very busy, including a woodpecker drumming in the woods. Spring is coming!

Jan 22 Ice Swim

Sunday 22nd Jan
Very strange experience. Ice created a ‘shelf’ just under the surface. - invisible until you bumped into it. Other chunks of ice lying on top of it and floating in the water. Tinkled like glass when you swam through it. Beautiful!

Ice ice baby

Sunday 22nd Jan

Jan 22 Ice Swim

Sunday 22nd Jan
Lake was frozen over although a path had already been smashed into the water by earlier swimmers.

Fog and frost

Saturday 21st Jan

Jan 21 A Foggy Day

Saturday 21st Jan
Fantastic walk this morning. Between the fog, the sun trying to come out and the spectacular hoar frost it was just beautiful! I loved it - beautiful weather, countryside, lots of dogs having lots of fun and nice people to chat with. This is what Red January is all about 😁👍🏻

Jan 20 Double dog day

Friday 20th Jan
Nell and Murphy keeping me company on tonight’s walk. Well over 20 000 steps completed today 👍🏻🦶🐾

Jan 20 - Happy Friday!

Friday 20th Jan
Just after lunch and I’ve already done a fair few steps 👍🏻 Lunch duty has its advantages!

Jan 19

Thursday 19th Jan
Have done 16591 steps already (have walked the dog) and haven’t even had my tea yet. Did a lot of extra walking around school today as I couldn’t face having thousands of steps left to do after tea. So - result. Today’s picture is a tiny frosty little plant. It’s cold out there!

Jan 18. All done!

Wednesday 18th Jan
Chuffed with myself for completing another day 👍🏻

Jan 18 - Ta daaa!

Wednesday 18th Jan
Finally did all my steps. Some days it feels like hard work. But it’s good for me - so there’s that!

Jan 18 Well damn

Wednesday 18th Jan
So it’s nearly half past eight. I haven’t stopped all day and I still have over 2000 steps to do. I’d better get my shoes on…

Jan 17 stepping up

Tuesday 17th Jan
Couldn’t face going out into Siberia for a second time tonight so finished my steps by marching on the spot. Did ‘em all and then some!

Jan 17 Cold and clear

Tuesday 17th Jan
Beautiful clear sky tonight but sadly the only ‘star’ bright enough to capture on my phone is Venus. So here is Venus and a bit of night time scenery. Still 3000 steps more to do today 😱 But first, tea.

Jan 16 afternoon walk

Monday 16th Jan
Still light! Nice pink sunset and very cold. The mud has frozen - yay!

Jan 16 Tree of Magnificence

Monday 16th Jan
My favourite tree looking spectacular in the morning sunshine 🌞

Jan 16 Chilly Monday

Monday 16th Jan
Oof - the wind is nippy today! Getting my first lot of steps in while the sun is still out (sort of).

Jan 15 Wading in for a sunny swim!

Sunday 15th Jan
It was almost like being in the Bahamas! Not. Air temp 7, water temp 6 but I have to say it felt really cold today. Took a while for it to stop biting!

Jan 15 Jeepers that’s cold!

Sunday 15th Jan
The cold water really bites at first

Jan 15 Lovely and fresh!

Sunday 15th Jan
What an amazing place to be! So peaceful and calm (apart from an amusing altercation between a coot and great crested grebe!) You can get closer to the birds while swimming. Ace!

Jan 15 Emerging through the bog

Sunday 15th Jan
The lake has filled up quite a bit with all the rain.

Jan 14 Forecast is cold!

Saturday 14th Jan
Might need this tomorrow for my swim 🥶🥶🥶🥶

Jan 14 Another walk on the wild side

Saturday 14th Jan
Wind was freezing but I missed the rain. Really hoping the wind drops by tomorrow for my cold swim. It’s cold enough without the wind howling around me!

Jan 13 Out and About

Saturday 14th Jan

Jan 13 Wet wet wet

Saturday 14th Jan
Murphy showing willing by doing her own version of cold water swimming.

More Saturday sunshine

Jan 13 Best Pals

Friday 13th Jan
Murphy and Nelly - tonight’s lovely walking companions. Steps all done and dusted for today. Time to relax.

13 Jan Happy Friday!

Friday 13th Jan
Friday is my two dog day! Always a lovely walk with them both. Gorgeous girls 😍

Jan 12

Thursday 12th Jan
Finding interesting photos in the fields in the dark is tricky. So I went somewhere else.

Jan 12 - spooky walk

Thursday 12th Jan
By way of a change I went through the churchyard tonight on my walk. Normal selfies getting boring.

Jan 12 - hard work today

Thursday 12th Jan
Today’s steps feel hard won. Long tiring day at work and I didn’t manage to get in as many steps as I would have liked. So had more steps than usual to do when I got home already exhausted. But it’s not a challenge if it’s easy!

Jan 11 Murphy on manoeuvres

Wednesday 11th Jan
My constant companion on this journey (apart from the swimming - arthritis in her hips means she doesn’t swim well anymore 😰) So she gets her own picture tonight 😊

Jan 11 Another photo of me in the dark

Wednesday 11th Jan
Better weather tonight and a few stars out. Saw Mars - just about. Cold so came back with rosy cheeks!

On arriving home…

Tuesday 10th Jan
‘OMG we’re not still doing Red January are we? I’ve been soaked once already today!’ (She’s an old girl now bless her)

Bleugh!

Tuesday 10th Jan
I’ve walked in better weather.

Jan 10

Tuesday 10th Jan
I am getting a tiny bit fed up of the path being like this. 😬 It’s hard work. Glad I did lots of steps around work today!

When you walk through a storm…

Tuesday 10th Jan
It went rather inclement! Howling a gale and raining. I might suggest Red June for next year.

Jan 9

Monday 9th Jan
The great thing about a day off is you can get your evening walk done before it gets dark!

Jan 9 am

Monday 9th Jan
Sunny but fresh today. Having to walk slowly at the moment as I’ve annoyingly aggravated an old tendon injury in my foot. Bit annoying! 😡

Jan 8

Sunday 8th Jan
Short walk round the village before tea to make up my step count. Murphy was unimpressed with this walk but she came back less muddy!

Jan 8

Sunday 8th Jan
Walked along Leeds and Liverpool canal today. Managed to miss the worst of the rain.

Jan 7 pm

Saturday 7th Jan
Forgot to take a photo of my evening walk as I got chatting to a friend from the village, so here’s a photo of my watch to prove I really did reach my goals again today 👍🏻

Jan 7 walk 1

Saturday 7th Jan
Am tired today so a gentle mooch in the woods to start with. Still got some exercise, fresh air and SUNSHINE!

Jan 6

Friday 6th Jan
I moved today - my way!

Jan 6
