What’s your reason to rise this January?
I’ve joined RED January 2025 and I’m going to rise each day during one of the most challenging month of the year.
I have history with RED January - this isn't my first year of taking part. I first signed up to the challenge during the long uncertain days of the pandemic. I needed to have a positive focus, something that was tangible, to see progression day by day.
I signed up with optimism but was unprepared for the almost immediate effect moving every day had on my mood.
What's the biggest lesson I learned from back then? When I didn't feel like moving I came to see that that was the time I needed to move most! Following the challenge - which I repeated for another year since then - I came to understand that building a movement habit means ignoring the days when your brain tells you that you don't feel like it. The brain wants the easiest path, and sometimes it's not always the best one. In these instances, letting your mood dictate how far you follow a healthy habit is the quickest way to fall out of the habit. Move on the days you don't feel like it, even of it's just a few stretches, or a 5 minute walk around the garden, or even a dance along to your favourite song in your living room.
If you miss a day, don't look back. You haven't failed or spoiled the rest of the week, month or year. Instead, look forward to the next workout or the next walk, or however else you choose to move.
My fitness efforts combined with your support will help RED’s official charity partner, Mind Over Mountains, reach anyone struggling with their mental health to gain the benefits of movement and connection in nature.
Together we can move mountains in 2025!
