I’ve joined RED January 2025 and I’m going to rise each day during one of the most challenging months of the year.

My fitness efforts combined with your support will help RED’s official charity partner, Mind Over Mountains, reach anyone struggling with their mental health to gain the benefits of movement and connection in nature.

Why? Because I said I would

What motivated you to start this? What motivates you to keep going when it's tough?
I lost 152 lbs in the last year thanks to bariatric surgery. It's done wonders for my mental health. But no longer using food as a crutch means finding alternative coping mechanisms with my SAD (or regular depression) kicks up. So I started running. I started training for a sprint triathlon and a half marathon. This month just shows how much my body can endure and encourages me to lean into training when the days are short and the nights long. 
A couple of years ago I asked my trainer why she was pushing herself so hard. She said "because I said I would!" Her word to herself was as important as her word to anyone else and she wanted to honor it. So everytime I wonder why...I remember it's because I said I would. 
And when that pleasant thought wears thin I remember that I COULDNT do this before. My body wouldn't support it. So I run for every day I couldn't before, and every day (in a far off future) where I won't be able to because we have a finite time with our bodies in this peak performance. Run for every kid with a broken leg, for every one going through cancer treatments, for everyone with rheumatoid arthritis...and suddenly it's such a blessing to be able to move our bodies this way.
