I’m taking part in RED January 2024, and have set myself a daily movement challenge during one of the toughest months of the year.

My fitness efforts combined with your support could back movement and mental health projects around the country, so everyone can enjoy the benefits that movement brings.

Together, we can go the extra mile for others!

My Updates

Everyone Active in West Wales

Monday 22nd Jan
Despite a stormy weekend in West Wales with the presence of Storm Isha I managed to maintain my activity levels, walking 3 hours a day.  We sensibly avoided the coastal path on Sunday and the 40mph offshore wind and walked up some of Carningli - not to the very top but far enough up to have to lean into the wind and to admire the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast line.

The calm before the storm had occurred in Swansea on the way through to Pembrokeshire where I attended my first sound bath.  Lying on the floor with cushions and a blanket being bathed in sounds, vibrations and frequencies for 50 minutes I felt thoroughly relaxed and recharged.  I had to maintain some level of consciousness however as I didn't want to snore the whole way through.  I highly recommend trying this experience.

Blue Monday

Monday 15th Jan

Apparently, its Blue Monday, or is it just another day? The third Monday of January gets some bad press as being the most depressing day of the year and this year its early so hopefully doesn’t feel as blue.  With the sun streaming through my window – the weather isn’t bad at all, the nights are drawing out and I’m on target to meet my RED January physical activity goals – those are on the positives.  On the negatives - yes my bank balance isn’t as healthy as it could be, I’m struggling to lose the few pounds I’ve gained during the Christmas over-indulgence and feeling washed out – I could do with a holiday in the sun.

Blue Monday’s origins come from the travel industry as a marketing gimmick to find the most depressing day of the year so that they could sell more holidays, but that’s frankly dismissive of people struggling with depression or mental health problems – let’s face it a holiday or tomorrow being Tuesday won’t solve everything.  Neither will increasing our physical activity during January but it could count towards better wellbeing and a change of habit now and for the rest of the year.

Come on fellow Redders, let’s turn this Blue Monday Red!

Ten Days in..,

Thursday 11th Jan

So, we’re over a third of the way through January already! How are we all doing? I hope you’re all finding RED January motivating. I know that I’ve made a definite effort to do more activity than I perhaps I would have otherwise, even if that’s just been a few extra steps each day.  This could be due to the target I’ve set myself, that its visible but also achievable.  I also think it’s because this is a collective effort.  There maybe only a few of us signed up here but we are a team and that creates a movement of belonging, recognition and purpose – things I think are important elements for wellbeing and certainly something I want to work towards for the rest of this year. Hope it’s going well.

New Years Day Dip

Monday 1st Jan
Happy 2024! To begin Red January what better than a New Years Day dip. I may have only managed to clock up about 6k worth of steps today in what felt like 3 hours of daylight but a brief body board in the sea at Aberafon certainly made me feel better after too much food, alcohol and bingeing on TV last night. I wasn’t brave enough to not wear a wetsuit like some others but the cold water started Red January off to hopefully a year of health, wellbeing and adventures.
